The Golden Boy: DIEGO ARMANDO MARADONA Soccer is the team sport that I like the most, and its the most popular sport
all around the world. I loved soccer since my first childhood years. I remember the first soccer ball I ever had. That was
in 1984 when I was an eight-year old boy. My mother bought me one after she noticed me watching it on TV all the time. Day
after day, I got closer to it, and by time went by, I started to teach myself better and better about soccer. I started following
the news of the local soccer players in Kuwait and other countries in the region. Until that moment, I have not chosen
a player to be my favorite yet, But when one of the important championships in soccer sport, the World Cup- Mexico 86, took
place, I started memorizing a big number of superb players from different countries. It was the first time I heard about famous
soccer names such as Elkjaer-Larsen of Denmark, Michel Platini of France, Zico and Socrates of Brazil, Herald Schumacher of
West Germany, Gary Lineker of England, and many more. That championship was the time for introducing a talented player to
me! It was the Argentinean legend soccer player Diego Armando Maradona. In my opinion, Maradona gave the soccer fans all
around the world one of the most exciting soccer show in history of this sport ever. He lead his national team, Argentina,
to reach the final game against West Germany, and ended his great performance in that championship by wining the most important
soccer title, the World Cup. Maradona is my favorite soccer player, and there are many reasons why I like him. The most
important reason is the extraordinary style of playing that he has and for the goals that he used to score for any team he
played for. Almost everyone who watched World Cup- Mexico 86 could say that championship was Maradonas championship, no one
elses! I would like to talk a little bit about Maradonas career life, and give some facts and information about this legend
Argentinean soccer player who was nicknamed El pibe de oro or the golden boy. Diego Armando Maradona was born in Lans,
in the outskirts of Buenos Aires on October 30, 1960. He loved soccer in his first childhood years. He started his successful
journey with soccer by joining a local soccer club that is called Argentinos Juniors. He was around ten years old when he
joined that club on Dec. 5, 1970 for the first time, and just a few days before his 16th birthday, he played his first game
in the Argentine top division with his team, Argentinos Juniors. When he joined the Argentinean youth team, he lead Argentina
to win the Youth World Cup in Japan on Sep.7, 1979 after playing in the final and winning their game against USSR 3/1. In
less than two years after wining the Youth World Cup, he joined one of the biggest and strongest soccer clubs in Argentina,
which is Boca Juniors, and that was on Feb.19, 1981. This club gave him the opportunity to develop his wonderful soccer skills.
Furthermore, it introduced him to the world in the World Cup- Spain 82. Both of Boca Juniors and World Cup- Spain 82 were
Maradonas passport to go to Europe and begin one of the most important periods in his career. He went to Spain first
and joined Barcelona on Jun.4, 1982, and played with Barcelona for two seasons. Then In 1984 he joined Napoli, in Italy, which
was the club that no one can mention it without talking about Maradona. Maradona lead Napoli to win its first local soccer
title in the history of the club, the Italian Serie A Championship in 1986/87 season, and also he lead it to win another one
in 1989/90 season. His team won other significant championships such as the Coppa Italia in 1987, an UEFA Cup, which was the
first victory ever in an international competition in the club history, that was in1989, and he also won the Supercoppa Italiana
in 1990. While he was in Napoli, he played at two World Cup competitions - Mexico 86 and Italy 90. Those two World Cups
were Maradonas best championships he ever played. In Mexico 86, in the famous game against England, he scored his famous goal
with his hand, the goal that is known as the Hand of God! Then he scored a magnificent goal after taking the ball from the
middle of the field and passing five English players, and even the goalkeeper, he passed them all then put the ball in the
empty nets to give Argentina a big victory 2-1 against England in the quarterfinals of that competition. Later on, he scored
two wonderful goals in the game against Belgium to give Argentina the opportunity to appear in the final game. At the final
game, Maradona lead his national team to the triumph defeating West Germany 3-2. This is the most significant period in Maradonas
life. He did not succeed only in achieving his childhood dream, which was playing the World Cup, but he succeeded in wining
the Cup! In Italy 90, he Lead Argentina again to play the final game of the World Cup after defeating the strong Italy
team in the heart of Rome on Jul.8, 1990. Another time, the final game was against West Germany, but this time Argentina and
its Maradona lost the game 1/0 with a very discussed penalty kick. Loosing the World Cup- Italy 90 was like the end of
the world for Maradona, he cried inside the field when everything was over. The people in the stadium did not understand his
sadness and booed him. He said about that, I would have never imagined that there could be so many people happy with my own
sadness! Those two World Cup were good examples to know one of the best soccer players in the world. Some soccer fans
like to name Maradona as the greatest soccer player in history. The FIFA, Fédération Internationale de Football Association,
gave him the Player of the 20th Century web-based award during the FIFA World Player of the Year awards in Rome December 11,
2000. Furthermore, his second famous goal of 1986 against England was chosen as the best goal ever in the history of football.
Out of soccer fields, Maradona got many awards that no soccer player can get easily. For example, he named as Ambassador
of the UNICEF in 1985, a Distinguished Citizen by the City of Buenos Aires in 1986, an Ambassador of Sport by the President
of Argentina in 1990, awarded as Master Inspirer of Dreams by the University of Oxford in 1995, and many more. Diego Armando
Maradona inspired many players and fans of soccer all around the world, including me of course! And when he decided to retire
from soccer, on October 30, 1997, on his 37th birthday, he might have stopped playing and entertaining his fans all around
the world, but hell stay in his fans minds, and he will keep holding his rank among the best players in the history of this
sport.
